In my own experience the Chakra's can be considered 7 states of being. none of them are transcended but all are activated and work in harmony for a fully realized human being. Now, there really is no need for an understanding of them in Tantric Yoga or Union because you will experience what others try to convey in words, experience is the best teacher and in Tantric Yoga experience is everything.

EDIT : Rez, I don't see Kundalini as making something new but realizing our Divinity and so we are coming home to where and what we are. in the spiritual realm the insight comes first and then a way to put it into words to point the way for others, words often misunderstood, granted the Chakra system is the most detailed explanation of our divinity. : )

Light has baffled even scientists…it has weight like matter …and it has wave-length as energy.. so it is still a mystery to define Light

Those on the path of spirituality see Light always during mediation, yoga or Tantra

Many see the Supreme Consciousness (God) as light

In Yoga seeing various colors of lights is very common.

Is Light a link between the creator and the created (or manifested).

I feel like you are on to something. in the Bible and Koran any mention of angles and Jesus after he arose mention bright light.

Astoundingly good question. Personally, I do not believe there is a real distinction between matter and God. For instance, the human body is composed of matter, however, we also emit electro-chemical impulses that are only perceptible with instrumentation. I believe the physical body 'blends' into the spiritual one, so that there is not cut and dry point where one body leaves off and the other one begins.

But, to answer your question, yes, light or something of similar high vibration does link us to Creator. again, thanks for such an insightful question.

No, the mind is the ultimate link. without the mind, there is no light for that individual. That is why there is spirituality found in all religions, even those that do not have gods.

Light is not the ultimate link to the supreme consciousness. It is electro magnetic radiation with wave and quantum natures. It is part of this world. However there is the majestic vedic aphorism:

Light is popularly used as a metaphor for knowledge. What kind of knowledge- Divine knowledge. Still the light can also have a more esoteric meaning the light mentioned is the Supreme light NOT the light of this world. It is brahman or Spirit not electromagnetic radiation. The various colours of light in meditation are just mental pictures put forth by the mind- one should go further. The real link is the light of knowledge – Just as a lamp is lit so the innner enlightenment takes place (enlightenment is not just theoretical knowledge- it is realised or experienced but theory is preliminary to realisation generally). The person who lights this divine lamp is the spiritual master. then one can finally understand what he or she is, what is our eternal nature and experience never ending ecstasy in association of the Infinite.

Light originally is the Emanation of the effulgent energy of God also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. Krishna is the original name and form of God and all other incarnations emanate from Him including the light called the Brahman effulgence. It is not the goal to merge with that light, though one can do it. Just as it is not the goal to come to the material world, but one fourth of the souls come here. They are both temporary situations. Great question, and you have gotten some great answers. This is my experience, God is before light, the light is an emanation from God and is also God in the material, mental, and physical. The mistake is made when the light associates itself as the body and mind only, threw meditation one stills the thought waves that keep the world dream going and then suddenly the light is transversed back to God and one "sees there face before there parents were born". This may not happen as one is sitting in meditation, in my case it came while I was working outside, and it does come all of a sudden. ~ : )

From my experiences…I share the answer…yes…Light is the " consciousness ". . . the ' energy '. The Light that I've experienced was / is the Light of (God) the one . . . Hence, my avatar name " onelight ".

your question itself says that light is matter as well as wave also it is true scientifically.so the God consciousness starts from the matter like soil and in between it changes to water then air then eather then light . i know only upto that but i believe that there should be more than that which i do not know at the moment.so light is not the link between the matter and God consciousness but it itself is the consciousness. now what is the pure and impure consciousness of the God . you have already stated in your question that supereme consciousness of the God is the light . now we can understand what is the link between the pure and impure consciousness of the God. it is the small brain situated at the back of your head , but i have not seen it, but i am sure that it is finer than light because it is faster than light.it is also written in rigveda as stated by mangolia .

Kriya Yoga is a process of mental purification that teaches meditation through techniques.

Kate Becker: Outer Space Due for a Little Spring Cleaning?

Please take a seat. No, not the seat piled with yesterday’s mail. Here, take the one with the tax forms and the stapler on it. Just move those aside. Put them anywhere. Yes, on top of the box of pickling jars is fine. Just watch out for the yoga mats and the bag full of used wrapping paper. I know, I could throw it away, but it’s perfectly good. And you never know when you might need it. now if I could only find my laptop.

Welcome to my junk problem. None of this junk is actually junk: It all has a practical purpose, or used to, or could again in the future. But what might be “useful stuff” in a 2,000-square-foot home quickly becomes cluttered junk in my “one plus” apartment.

You might think that outer space is so big that it would be immune from the junk effect. yet because most of the stuff we send into space occupies a relatively small region less than 2,000 kilometers from the surface of Earth, space is more like my cluttered office than it is the expansive basement of your average McMansion. Low-Earth orbit is littered with defunct satellites, spent rockets and even astronaut trash.

NASA’s Orbital Debris Program estimates that there are almost 20,000 pieces of large debris ( “large” being a technical term for “bigger than a grapefruit” ), half a million particles measuring between 1 and 10 cm in diameter, and tens of millions of pieces of even tinier detritus, like paint flakes, circling the Earth today.

All of that trash endangers active satellites and can even pose a threat to astronauts on the space shuttle and aboard the International Space Station. In fact, much of what we know about the smallest impactors, which can’t be tracked with radar like larger debris can, comes from looking at tiny pocks and dents in space shuttles after they’ve returned to Earth.

Though these vessels are shielded against the hail of fine-grained debris they encounter, they occasionally have to fire their engines to maneuver out of the path of larger chunks of junk. In two instances in 2008 and 2009, astronauts on the International Space Station took shelter in their Soyuz “lifeboat” when NASA tracked debris on a near-collision-course. Luckily, the debris passed without hitting the space station.

The worse news is that debris breeds debris: When two pieces of space junk hit each other, they create a cascade of wreckage that increases the risk of future collisions. the new fragments are smaller than the original debris pieces, but because they’re traveling at 7 or 8 kilometers per second, they still carry enough energy to do serious damage. some scientists have predicted a worst-case scenario in which space debris multiplies so quickly that we become trapped on Earth; it will no longer be worth the risk to send new satellites and spacecraft into orbit.

What can we do about all that space junk? on paper, at least, there are plenty of solutions. you could use lasers to vaporize the debris — though you might accidentally start World War III in the process. less disturbing to international policymakers would be a kinder, gentler laser that could nudge dangerous debris off course using the faint pressure of light itself. Others have suggested dispatching orbiting garbage trucks to scoop up trash, or attaching propulsion systems to debris on the fly so that the junk can power itself out of orbit and crash down to Earth.

But as anyone who has ever participated in the ritual of spring cleaning knows, it’s more important (and easier) to keep the junk from accumulating than it is to clean it up once it’s already there. Space agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency are already thinking about how to reduce the junk that’s stranded in space. It’s a technical problem, but also a diplomatic, legal and economic one.

Cleaning up my office? that involves some diplomacy as well, but only with my husband. Maybe a little spring cleaning gift would do the trick. And I already have the paper to wrap it in.

April Hutchinson catches up with dynamic CEO and president Niki Leondakis IF YOU DO a search for Kimpton on Twitter, one of the many things that pops up is “socially-conscious sipping”. whatever, that is right? Socially-conscious sipping is what guests are doing during the complimentary wine hour held at Kimpton’s hotels each evening. the wine hours give guests a chance to wind down, given many of them will be travelling on their own for business. It’s also a chance to showcase one of the many measures Kimpton makes to ensure its hotels are as environmentally aware as they can be, and to ‘do the right thing’. Emily Wines, who is Kimpton’s aptly named wine director and master sommelier, chooses the wines based on their ethical and environmental values, working with local producers and offering biodynamic and organic wines. Explore on Twitter further and you will find a couple who are doing the “Kimpton Crawl” – such fans are they of the hotels and their pet-friendly policies, that they are travelling across the US for a year with their dog, staying in 25 Kimpton hotels along the way and blogging as they go. Stories like these go some way to explaining why the hotels have become almost a household name amongst savvy travellers. for many in the UK, Kimpton is probably not a massively-known brand, but it is the forerunner of boutique hotels in the US. Brits do however make up the biggest international guest segment for Kimpton, so some of us must be switched on to the hotels. President and chief operating officer of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants Niki Leondakis doesn’t rule out overseas plans but until then, travellers can content themselves with trying one of the 50 or so hotels across cities and resorts in the US. Leondakis has been with the firm for close on 18 years and has seen it grow significantly, instilling her strong values along the way and carrying on the tradition of founder Bill Kimpton. Here, she explains the company’s philosophy. What is the ethos of a Kimpton hotel?Our founder, the late bill Kimpton, travelled extensively in Europe and loved the style of boutique hotels there, but found nothing of the same nature in the US so he decided to start his own, opening our first in San Francisco and that is where we are still based today. All our hotels are boutique style, locally-inspired, design-focused, around 200-room size on average, with individual chef-run restaurants and a high level of personal care and staff ready to customise each guest’s stay. they are mainly urban, but we also have resorts. another common stream is that of wellbeing. We all live stressful lives these days and we appreciate this, so at the hotels we want to try and help guests create an in-room spa experience when they stay with us and to look after themselves. there are on-demand yoga videos, yoga mat supplied for guests in the rooms and we’ve just started partnering with health and nutrition expert Joy Bauer to create nutritious meals for room service. they are all 500 calories or less so guests can eat light and healthy if they choose to. We are also offering in-room video clips to help travellers maintain a balanced life on the road. We want to try and make people feel at home, not like they are in a hotel, so the complimentary wine hours we mentioned already help people socialise while staying with us. How has the company grown?We have 51 hotels now across the US but there are plenty of other places we want to be. Over the next two to three years, we are focused on places like South Florida, Texas, the Carolinas, Nashville, Cincinatti, more in new York – wherever our customers are travelling to, we want to be there. We probably open around four hotels a year – we have our second hotel in Philadelphia opening in 2012 and one in Phoenix. Our ideal model is adaptive conversions and to re-use historic buildings; we both operate and own hotels. the last couple of years have been tough. But the recession for us created a lot of opportunities in both areas – to take on the management of some great hotels that came to us looking for help and also to acquire some others which unfortunately had to sell. for 2011, the projections are good, but we still operate in a fragile environment and food and energy costs are rising so much. A lot of your hotels seem female-friendly – is this a specific focus?We appeal to a wide and inclusive demographic – from families who are treated to our kids’ programmes through to a big following in the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community, but yes, we definitely noticed we have a high proportion of female travellers. We felt that this was because they appreciated our attention to detail, our style and design and also responded to the desire we have as hoteliers to make people feel comfortable. the number one stress for women travellers is safety and security so we do all we can to alleviate those worries for them. We also make sure via our Forgot It We’ve Got It programme that women can rely on us for the things they need, from straightening irons to fashion tape! We also make sure there are full-length mirrors and well-lit make-up mirrors in the rooms, as well as our bathrobes in animal prints to make them feel feminine. As a woman, have you found it hard to get ahead in business yourself?I started off in the restaurant business and worked in food and beverage departments with other hotels. I used to come across things like being asked to show staff how to serve the afternoon tea, when I knew I was capable of so much more. I always tried not to make my career and business a gender issue and just worked hard. But there were many times when actually, I realised my gender was an issue – for some. I also realised that getting ahead in the hospitality business was more of a struggle for some women than it was for me, so I started a mentoring programme. Today, Kimpton’s Mentor Program is for everyone and it pays attention to whatever peoples’ specific needs might be. I always try to look at situations as a group of businesspeople trying to work together, but you do still have to understand the dynamics of how men and women think and operate differently in business environments. Are travellers increasingly eco-savvy?Absolutely, but I think because of our San Francisco roots and because of Bill’s beliefs, ‘doing the right thing’ has always been in our DNA. We were into CSR before it was even called that and a ‘fashionable’ thing to do. Guests just expect us to be like that now, and we are. bill believed it was our responsibility to do things better and to part of the community. We had ‘green roofs’ before it was even popular, and in 2005, we standardised eco policy across the hotels. We now have more than 100 operating practices, including things like using non-toxic cleaning products in the rooms, offering organic items in the mini-bar, recycling receptacles in guestrooms, using responsibly fished seafood, all the way through to our Wines That Care programme, under which we select wines for our hotels’ wine hours from wineries chosen for their dedication to the earth and local communities. And almost all our hotels are now Green Seal certified. Is it important to support the communities you work in?We support several charities on a national level, such as Dress for Success, which provides support to low-income women. It’s an inspiring thing to be involved in, as we provide job interview suits and career development assistance to low-income women so they can help themselves to further their potential. We also work with Red Ribbon Day, the HIV and AIDS charity. We also work with the Nature Conservancy nationally and help locally over the summer months to clean up turn urban wastelands into better community spaces. Each hotel also supports a charity locally to them choosing to get involved at a grass roots level to whatever feels relevant to them, whether it’s something culturally, the arts or within their community. What other trends have you noticed?The rise in the number of people travelling with pets! That has gone through the roof. We have all sorts stay with their owners in our hotels, from ferrets to llamas as well as dogs and cats and you have to appreciate how attached people are to these animals. I have cats myself but wouldn’t travel with them; although my mother travels with hers! everyone is different. Surveys show people with pets are less stressed and in keeping with that, we offer a service called Guppy Love, where guests can request a goldfish to stay overnight in their guestroom to help relieve stress. What about the role of social media?We are also obviously adapting to that and to its role in our guests lives. It is not to be seen directly as a sales revenue channel. We use it to listen to our guests, to have conversations with them and to relate to them. It is invaluable to be able to search and see what people are saying about you and set the pace for discussion too. Individual hotels have their own personality and we have an overall Twitter stream for Kimpton. I also use it to speak to all our staff and had our own “twitterchat” recently, a tweet session which meant as many as 6,500 employees at any one time were all able to have a conversation via Twitter, which was great and really productive. Of course, I also make a point of visiting each hotel at least once a year in person! All staff need to have access to each other and to management and feel connected to what is going on within the company. It helps to keep our culture thriving. We’re also proud to be a Fortune 100 ‘best place to work’ company. Treat people well and they will treat your customers well. What are plans for the 30th?We will be giving away 30 weekends on Facebook and will have offers and discounts around April 1, which is when we celebrate and will do a lot internally, as it also gives us chance to honour the memory of bill.   ALL ABOUT NIKIBorn in West Springfield, Massachusetts, Niki’s first role was as a manager for Marriott in 1982 in Nashville, Tennessee. she held food and beverage director roles with Ritz-Carlton before joining Kimpton in 1993 as director of restaurant operations. she was subsequently promoted to executive vice-president for hotels too, becoming chief operating officer in 2003 and president in 2010. What is your favourite city? I love London and Paris equally. both have incredible museums, history, architecture, shopping and world-class historic hotels. I love spending time in Paris trying restaurants and enjoying its culinary history. I love London for its royal traditions and British humour.  Where was your first holiday? Crete, Greece What is your little luxury in life? Currently, a little indulgence at home is Molton Brown linen spray.How do you get through a flight? my Andrea Bocelli airplane playlist on my iPod, Chamomile tea, skinny jeans, ballet pumps and a cashmere wrap. Best thing about your job? The constant flow of inspiration that comes from being surrounded by the creative people I work with, and the imaginative hotel environments and ways of caring for our guests that they bring about.  What is your best tip to get ahead? A lot! my husband was booking some flights for us the other day and he asked me if I was aware I had 75,000 miles on United to use! I've Never Done Yoga Before-What Do I Need to Start?

I keep hearing I need a yoga mat-highly recommended. so I won't slip when I'm trying the poses.

I'm way out of shape and have trouble doing even the basic poses, and I've heard that for me it's a good idea to pick up a yoga block and strap. I've seen the yoga kits at walmat for about 20 bucks where it comes with a mat, strap and block.

Is it a good idea to get something like that before I start yoga?

Will it help make the poses easier to do and help me from getting frustrated at not being able to do the poses?

Most the yoga kits I see come with a DVD guide-and a 15-20 minute video showing you how to do simple poses the right way.

Is it a good idea to get a kit with that type of video as well?

How do the blocks and straps help in the long run? thanks!!

Not being sarcastic, but I think legs and arms and a torso are needed.

You need also to learn the deep proper breathing techniques to get the most out of your yoga practice… and to know the poses and their physiological benefits also is very helpful for you.

would NEVER carry around a yoga mat. don't do yoga, but if I did I wouldn't need people to know. the only think people can tell about me, without talking to me, is that I LOVE music. (headphones on wherever I go) now, if I was told I couldn't listen to music (besides work rules), I'd do it anyway.

Oh c'mon, I know some Conservatives that do yoga too!

Mason has a long athletic background, including field hockey, triathlons, four marathons, an Ironman race, coaching, hiking, biking, skiing and being part of a gold-medal collegiate crew team. She was also a high school teacher and is a certified personal trainer.

After her son, Levi, was born in may 2007, Mason says she suffered postpartum depression and felt isolated. She also wasn’t sure what exercises were appropriate for her still-recovering body.

“I couldn’t find a good place to work out that we could afford, because we went from two incomes to one,” she says.

Mason eventually learned about the Baby Boot Camp and decided to open a franchise in Boulder. the Nov. 3 class was the first class.

“Having that time together with other moms and getting out of the house — I didn’t do that enough, especially while exercising,” Mason says. “I was missing the component of being active, getting the endorphins going and being out in the fresh air, which is another critical piece of Baby Boot Camp that I love.”

What is the workout? Baby Boot Camp’s StrollFit class is a fitness program designed specifically for moms who want to get in shape while spending time with their baby. Classes combine strength-training with cardio drills, and end with Pilates, yoga and ab exercises.

The class will incorporate strollers, although my class did not. (It was the first class, and Mason was still working out how it flows best.) Keeping the kids in strollers keeps them safe (I almost stepped on a few crawlers during my lunges, so I agree with this idea), while freeing up the moms to actually work out.

My class was located in the Yo Mama Yoga studio, but classes will take place outside in the spring. Mason is also looking for a Louisville location and hopes to open another class date at a Boulder church.

What does it cost? Moms can try a one-time drop-in for free. after that, classes range from $40-$60 per month, or a $10 drop-in rate. You also have to pay a $50 enrollment fee, which is made less painful because it covers exercise equipment, including a resistance tube, Theraband, backpack and water bottle.

Who does it? My class had 10 mamas, which is the maximum. Baby Boot Camp aims to keep class sizes small so it feels more like personal training than group fitness. Plus, the room size was limited. ten moms also means 10 kids.

Dads, other caregivers and pregnant women are also welcome.

You can bring kids of any age, as long as they can stay in a stroller.

The biggest concern that participants have is that their kids won’t want to sit in the stroller for 45 minutes, but Mason says that she tries to keep the strollers moving, or they circle the strollers up so the kids look at each other. This usually keeps them amused, Mason says.

When: 9:15-10:15 a.m. Wednesday and 9-10 a.m. Friday. In December, Mason will launch a 9-10 a.m. Monday class.

Level: Intensity can be increased to accommodate your needs and abilities, but Mason advises women six to 16 weeks postpartum to stick to a low- or no-impact regimen. I found the class a three on a 10-point scale. it was not difficult, but it was fun and I did get my heart rate up.

Format: A 5-minute warm-up and stretching; two to three minutes of cardio; and then two to three strength-training exercises organized in a circuit. Class ends with 10 to 15 minutes of core work and a cool down. I was happy that Mason’s core work was tailored specifically for postpartum moms.

Equipment: My class used resistance tubes, bands and yoga mat for the moms. Books, balls, dolls, a really annoying I mean awesome musical calculator and a very popular rubber spatula were used by the babies. My daughter also utilized the green resistance tubes orally, despite my persistent effort to keep them away from her. She thought it tasted like green spaghetti (according to my rough translation of the phrase, “Ba, ba, ba, ba, bob, bub, bab”).

What to wear: Comfortable clothes, a supportive exercise bra (or two), running shoes and sunscreen, a hat and extra layer of clothing for both you and the baby in case the class goes outside.

Also bring a yoga or Pilates mat (although Yo Mama has mats you can use), a water bottle (and one for your kiddo), snacks, toys and books for your baby (Yo Mama also has a basket you can use), sunscreen and a stroller. If you’re nursing, I recommend pumping or nursing before class. especially with the jumping jacks action.

Muscles worked: full body. the class targets all muscle groups every time, in case moms can’t make more than one class per week.

“We try to work on muscles moms will use: picking up the baby, bending over — all the demands of motherhood nobody tells you about,” Mason says.

One new move: Wrap a resistance band around your ankles and hold your baby. Standing hip-width apart, do squats, raising your baby up over your head when you stand up. It’s like a jump squat with weights, without the jumping.

Jumping can be dangerous on postpartum knees and joints because you still have relaxin hormones in your body, making your joints loose, Mason says.

What’s different: This class tends to be smaller than other stroller-based mom-focused offerings, such as Stroller Strides in Longmont, according to Mason. Baby Boot Camp caps class sizes at 12.

What I loved: My daughter had the time of her life. I don’t think I have ever seen a group of such happy, well behaved, adorable munchkins before. the other kids were so cool, and watching them all interact and drool and steal the calculator from each other helped the time pass quickly. (Plus, I didn’t have to entertain Bettie Anne like I would have at home.) it kept my brain distracted, and I was surprised to notice how sweaty I was at the end of class.

I also loved how one of the older girls tried to do the exercises with her mom. This was a physical reminder of the good example we are setting for our kids by bringing them to a class like this, where they can watch us take care of our bodies.

Furthermore, I was really happy to see a wide spectrum of moms with different fitness abilities and needs. I felt very comfortable, yet challenged, and totally welcome. I wish I had gotten some of the mom’s phone numbers to hang out with later, and I am totally not a “Let’s have a play-date” kind of mom. Or so I thought.

What I didn’t like: My class felt too big for the room we used. I think keeping the kids in strollers in the future will give moms more space to move. although it probably won’t be as fun for the kids.

Inspiration for class: the California founder of Baby Boot Camp, Kristen Horler, started the program in 2001 after having her first child. She couldn’t find a challenging workout that didn’t require hiring a personal trainer and babysitter or a gym membership. She combined her background as a fitness instructor, mom, personal trainer and triathlete to create the program.

How I felt after the class: happy. I enjoyed spending this time with my daughter. the energy of the class was great, and it left us both in a good mood. She fell asleep the second her head hit the car seat.

How I felt later: I didn’t feel sore anywhere, but I did find myself talking about the class to other moms. I would be interested in trying the class using a stroller to see if I can get a more intense workout without having to tend to my baby so often. then again, she’s 8 months old and that kind of comes with the territory.

Can I Use Regular,Thin Cotton Pants for Yoga? Like Sweats,but Thinner? What About a Shirt?

Do I have to buy yoga clothes, or can i just use a thin cotton shirt, and a pair of cotton pants, or what is the idea with yoga clothes anyway? what is any different than regular thin cotton pants and a thin long sleeved sweater?
i can understand a mat, and a bag and strap, but what is the big idea with the special clothes?
Also,i see flare leg pants.i don't want to use those. what is the idea with that?

Serious answers only, ok? i really would like to do this and want to know what I can do instead of using the specailty clothes.
They look like what I already own.

I do Yoga in my home so I wear a pair of PJ pants and a tank or a tshirt and it works just fine. As long as your clothing isn't tight they will work.

YARDLEY – about 100 folks turned out for the 2nd annual Holiday Business Showcase at the Yardley Community Centre on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 13.many of the attendees were participating in Landmark Towns’ “Passport to Main Street.” Yardley Borough was one of four stops on a trolley trip between New Hope and Bristol boroughs. Morrisville Borough was the other stop.Pete Toft of Nottingham Insurance was stationed at Buttonwood Park, directing people from the trolley to the Yardley Community Centre on South Main Street.Megan Brogna, a reverse loan mortgage officer with Bank of America, is chairman of the Holiday Business Showcase Committee. The event was hosted by the Yardley Business Association (YBA).Brogna said, “We’re thrilled with the turnout…The weather has been just an added plus.”“we want to promote the businesses in Yardley and the surrounding areas,” she said. “This gives them the opportunity to reach out to the public and let them know the services that they offer.”in addition to the holiday showcase, the YBA hosts a similar event in the spring.Brogna said there were 22 participants in this year’s showcase, including Canal Street Grille, which was giving out food samples and 10 percent off discount coupons.“We’re here to promote the re-launch of our restaurant. Two years ago, Suzan Fleck gained a perfect little baby girl and lost her perfect little abs.

But the Longmont mama wants both. she wants her abs and baby, too.

She’s enlisting a 20-year-old research-based approach called the Tupler Technique to chase that goal. and she says it’s working; she’s lost 3 inches in three weeks, without dropping a single pound, and she’s only halfway through the 6-week seminar.

Fleck’s results are not rare.

But this is no infomercial, so it’s no quick and easy fix, Fleck disclaims. It’s a 24-hour-per-day commitment to wear a special splint for weeks; an 18-week program of abdominal exercises, beyond the length of the seminar; and a lifelong commitment to muscular maintenance.

Plus, during its first few months’ debut in Boulder County, the Tupler Technique has stirred a bit of controversy. it teaches that no one — especially not postnatal women — should do crunches, jackknives or Pilates 100s.

Boulder’s Tupler teacher claims the general population isn’t strong enough to do these moves correctly, which can create or increase a split, actually weakening your abs and making them look worse. beyond cosmetics, weak abs can bring on a throbbing back and other physical problems.

Tupler advocates also frown on certain yoga poses for folks with the split — because beer-bellied men can have this, too — including the ever-present downward dog, plank and cat-cow. Advocates say gravity puts too much pressure on the already weak tummy tissue.

A Boulder gym without Pilates 100s or planks?

Fleck says she would gladly make the sacrifice to feel like herself again.

Before the baby, Fleck, a triathlete, surfer and runner, had the belly of a Greek god. The kind of abs that most women write mental odes about and then jealously curse under their breath.

She was 38 and her pregnancy progressed smoothly. Until the baby pressed snooze and came nearly a month late. in that last month, she quickly packed on weight and her back pretty much decided it was done with the pregnancy. After 36 hours of labor and an emergency C-section, Fleck was left with a healthy daughter and an extra wide (six fingers wide) gap between the two sides of the top layer of her abs, the rectus abdominis.

These muscles are what can give the belly a six-pack look. but among many — if not all, according to some experts — pregnant women, hormones and the pressure of the uterus cause the sides to split. The tissue connecting the muscles becomes weak and soft, after all that stretching to make room for the baby.

Depending on genetics and how you exercise your abs before, during and after pregnancy, this injury will likely never heal on its own, according to Abby Kurtz, of Boulder, a personal trainer and Colorado’s only licensed Tupler Technique practitioner. Kurtz began teaching in Boulder in August.

That’s what makes the mummy tummy. The pooch. The middle-age spread. You’ve heard the names, and you’ve seen the bellies, even on the fittest of Boulderites.

In fact, some of the hardest-core athletes may be exasperating this injury by jumping back into ab exercises that cause an outward or forward-thrusting force on the rectus, i.e. crunches as you seem them done in many a gym where the abs push outward, Kurtz says.

Fleck’s separation did not go away. she began suffering from drop-to-the-floor painful back spasms.

“I would be doing something and I would literally just collapse because I couldn’t keep myself upright,” says Fleck, who lived in California at the time. “It was really scary. You’re carrying a baby around, and I was afraid I would drop her.”

She sought out a rehabilitative Pilates instructor and took 20 private sessions.

“It seemed to get worse and there was no relief from the pain,” she says. “I didn’t get stronger, didn’t see my waist or belly changing at all over the three months I did intensive Pilates. I didn’t continue after that.”

Over the years, Fleck lost the 70 pounds she gained during pregnancy. but her belly still looked like a cone. when she bent over, she says it felt like her guts were dangling inside her flesh like trash in a bag.

Little did she know, her metaphor was biologically right on.

With the tissue and muscles stretched out, there’s no support to hold you all in, according to Kurtz. in other words, that mommy pooch is often actually (brace yourself) your organs hanging out, contained by only by a thin layer of tissue. Like a trash bag.

The Tupler Technique was designed by a registered nurse to heal this connective tissue and refuse the two sides of the rectus muscle.

The exercises are subtle and small, beginning by sitting and sucking in your belly button toward your spine hundreds of times per day, broken into three circuits.

The premise: The three layers of ab muscles are connected, so every time the deepest (transverse) muscle presses back toward the spine, it pulls the two sides of the top rectus with it, pulling them together. Conversely, if this deep muscle moves forward forcefully, it pushes the muscles apart.

After several weeks when that deep muscle is sufficiently strong, Kurtz teaches participants how to move to the ground and incorporate a small head lift that resembles a highly mechanical crunch starting from the inside-abs-out, without lifting the shoulders off the ground.

Participants must also constantly (even to bed) wear a specific fabric splint tightly crossed over the stomach, designed to “pull the two sides together.” Participants fill out a log three times a day for six weeks. this consistency is key, Kurtz says.

Sucking in the belly button sounds simple enough. but Kurtz’s Mummy Tummy classes hinge upon three lengthy seminars, slide show presentations and a stack of handouts.

“It’s real easy to do wrong,” Kurtz says. “There is a lot of background knowledge and things that can reverse it. You need to know anatomically what’s going on.”

Boulder personal trainer Chuck Hyde, at Functional Fitness on Broadway, says the system makes sense.

“It’s probably the most complete system that honors the experience and process of being pregnant that exists,” says Hyde, who is not associated with the technique.

He notes the backing by clinical studies — including a 2005 study by Columbia University in new York. The study concluded that an exercise program specifically targeting the deep transverse muscle can prevent or decrease the gap.

In fact, 90 percent of pregnant women not exercising these ab muscles exhibited signs of separation.

The Tupler Technique claims it can help any mom — even 70-year-old women — no matter how long ago the separation occurred.

As Hyde sees it, the main problem with the Tupler Technique is that “she won’t be able to teach enough practitioners to teach it fast enough. if anyone is looking for a new line of work that will make money, this is a no-brainer.”

But what happens after the gap is closed? That’s what really concerns Hyde.

“How do they strengthen the new mama to pick up a 20-pound car seat while shutting a door, carrying the 15-pound diaper bag, all while balancing on one leg opening the other car door when it’s windy outside, talking on the phone to organize the next doctor’s visit because the baby’s snot is a little yellow and mama is worried?” Hyde says.

The Tupler exercises are not enough to train the entire body for all of a life’s demands, he says.

“Only a functional fitness trainer can meet the forever-changing needs of a newborn’s mother,” Hyde says.

As Kim Bigelow sees it, the answer is Pilates.

Pilates can strengthen the full body — and it can heal a separation, says Bigelow, a Pilates instructor at Core Wisdom in Boulder.

She knows firsthand. Bigelow says she experienced a rectus split after having her son 12 years ago. she rehabilitated her abs by doing specific, small, deep Pilates exercises with her arms crossed over her stomach, right hand on the left side, left on the right — “exactly what (the Tupler) belt is doing,” Bigelow says.

In fact, the basis of the Tupler Technique is “basically the Pilates fundamental exercises,” Bigelow says.

Which is why she says Pilates 100s — and even jackknives — are perfectly safe, if you are strong enough to do them. if you have an injury, your range of motion will just be limited to maintain proper core integrity and not push out the abs.

Which is possible, Bigelow says. she can do it.

Bigelow and many other local Pilates instructors don’t dispute the dangers out an outward force on the abs. their beef: The exercise the Tupler folks warn about is not Pilates 100s.

“To not have that integrity is to not be doing Pilates,” Bigelow says.

Debra Layne, with North Boulder Physical Therapy and North Boulder Pilates, warns that 100s and jackknives are advanced exercises.

“It would be utterly foolish to do fitness Pilates or advanced yoga until the diastasis is firmly reconnected by scar tissue many months postpartum,” Layne says.

Bigelow learned that firsthand, too. in fact, she thinks she created her separation by doing Pilates moves that she shouldn’t have been doing during her pregnancy. That’s why there are prenatal and postnatal Pilates classes, she says.

If she could do it over, Bigelow says she would have been more cautious.

“I would still do Pilates,” she says. “But prenatal Pilates is much milder and with a different focus. You won’t do a serious 100 in there, and it’ll be propped and padded. It’s a good alternative.”

Pilates 100s are a common Pilates move where you lie on your back, bringing your head up, looking down at the belly button, upper spine curled off the floor. Extend arms and legs straight, slightly pumping arms up and down while taking short breaths for a total of 100 breaths and pumps.

What is the Tupler splint?

The fabric and Velcro splint is different than a girdle or other bands because it wraps around the waist, left over right, with a design that is supposed to pull the two halves of the muscles closer together. by comparison, body-shaping garments compress or pull back the ab muscles.

New Yoga-Paws hand units feature eco-friendly TPE material with a curved, ergonomic design and external seams, similar to driving gloves, for added comfort and mobility. the backside of the hand units are made from a breathable mesh material to allow air circulation and a Velcro closure for an adjustable fit. between the fingers, new “safety belt” straps keep the hand in proper position within the unit. A new moisture-absorbent, towel-like lining absorbs seven times its weight in moisture, allowing the practitioner to stay locked in place, feeling dry and comfortable.

The Yoga-Paws foot unit features a heal-strap to prevent movement during practice. the top of the foot is covered in a smooth, comfortable Lycra-spandex material that adjusts to provide a close, glove-like fit for various foot sizes. Young Mother Looks to Secret Santa for Holiday Help

Bonnie has spent her life standing on her own two feet. she worked and studied to get a good job as a professional and enjoyed the respect of her peers. her husband, Rick, can say the same about his approach to life.

Yet swiftly and suddenly tragedy hit the couple. Bonnie was in a massive car accident and a year or so later Rick was diagnosed with two debilitating illnesses. now the couple must reach out for support from family, friends and sometimes even strangers.

They do it for themselves. more importantly they do it for their young son.

“We have had to go on social service. I have lost my ability to drive,” Bonnie candidly says. “It is a struggle. my husband and I take shifts with our son. my parents come and visit twice a year and try to cram everything in that time. to give my son experiences, we can’t afford like movies.”

Both husband and wife have large pharmacy bills, as well as having to make the rounds with specialists.

“I was very high functioning,” Bonnie said. “It has really devastated us. I used to bike and do yoga and dance. now I sit and do needlepoint, if I have the energy. Sometimes it is hard to get out of bed.”

What is also hard is facing the Christmas holidays. not for themselves, but for their son.

“My son grew three inches this summer,” Bonnie said. “My mother-in-law, thank goodness, will hit a lot of garage sales and we will be able to have clothes. And our church has given us clothes. We will get used toys.”

That’s why Bonnie is reaching out to the county’s Secret Santa fund for her son.

“He is already getting used stuff … to have something new,” she said.

And helping those like Bonnie and Rick’s son is why the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals is working so hard to raise money for this holiday’s Secret Santa program. And Bonnie and Rick are deeply grateful to them and to all who contribute.

“There are people out there who do work really hard, really have put everything into making a life and having a family,” she said. “They give it their all every day and still have problems making it. at some point, you never know if it could be you. You are that far from needing help. With programs like that, especially with our economy, it is a lifesaver. … there are circumstances that are not your fault. It is really nice that people care like that. It does bring true happiness.”
