I'm still in the process of housebreaking my puppy. She was lying in her doggy bed with a chew bone behaving nicely and so I decided to do some yoga. I laid out my yoga mat, and she was curious about it and came to inspect it. I gently told her "no, that's not for you. This is Mommy's yoga mat." And then gave her the chew bone and placed her back in her puppy bed. Then I went to the kitchen to get some water and when I returned to the living room where the yoga mat is the puppy had peed ALL OVER it.

So I put her in "time out" (which is in her crate that has a door on it that she can't get out of) and then cleaned up the mess with Mr. clean with Febreeze. I know its clean and sanitary now, but I'm worried that I should throw out the yoga mat anyway because I know that even though it is clean puppies can still smell places they've peed and pooped before, and then they think its okay to pee and poop there again. I don't want her to pee on my yoga mat again. do you think she can still smell it even after I used Mr. clean on it?

NO wash it with a hot, wet, and soapy towel and let it dry. (you might not want the towel anymore though) next time don't give the dog the bone after wards because that is like rewarding it. when you do punish it though put him or her in it's crate because it will never pee in his/her home. great way to housebreak your puppy! good luck!

Rinse it with a diluted white-wine vinegar solution. it will kill the scent. but, it could discolor your mat.

Don't use the crate as a punishment. Puppies in the process of house-training need to be supervised every second. if you go into another room, even for a moment, take your puppy with you. Crate her to prevent accidents when you cannot watch her, not after she's had an accident. if you properly supervise your puppy, she won't have the opportunity to pee on the yoga mat again. you might also want to use an enzyme cleaner made for pet odors.

if you've washed the yoga mat and your not sure if it's going to be any good after cleaning it maybe
it's best to get rid of it,you could always get another one. maybe when ever your doing yoga just put
your puppy in the crate while your doing it and then when your finished let her out . it's best not to
keep your mat where she's going to be and then she wont want to use it for peeing on.

Don't throw the mat out. just buy a product that will get rid of the smell, or use something like vinegar. Punishing her for peeing on the mat was good.
I suggest you don't do yoga again until she's housebroken! Unless she's in her crate or something.

if she does do her Business on your yoga mate again bring her ot the mate and show her what she has down tell her " NO bad puppy bad bad" something but SHOW her it , if she gets scared or something its ok she will calm down after awhile , i did this with my puppy and she was potty trained and everything she knows that she has to wait for her walk .

Her “karma flow” class is an extension of that commitment.”The idea is what comes around goes around,” she said. “It’s one way to practice loving kindness to our neighbors and our community.”How it worksEvery Friday afternoon, the “karma flow” class at Urban Yoga is offered on a donation only basis with all of the proceeds going to a local charity.”We put out a little bowl and people just donate,” Barrow said. “We’ve had some classes raise close to $200, which over time certainly comes up to a lot of money.”During December, all proceeds went to SafeHaven of Tarrant County, which provides services to victims of domestic abuse. other classes have raised money for foster care and local charities.Students have been quick to embrace the concept and not because they see it as a bargain.”People are looking for outlets to give back to the community,” Barrow said. ” It’s just been beautiful to watch; I had no idea people would be so excited about giving.”Attendance for Urban Yoga’s 4:30 class is often as high as any prime-time class.”I wouldn’t consider happy hour on Friday to be a big time for yoga, but people come,” Barrow said.Lori Eklund, a karma flow class regular, said she likes the idea that the class instructors want to raise money for a charity.”They talk about the work that the charity does before the class, so you have the mindset that you’re doing something good,” she said.When Woods opened Karmany Yoga in Dallas, donation yoga was something she had seen on the West Coast.”One of my favorite studios in California is donation-based, and I just fell in love with the concept and the diversity it encouraged,” she said. “I thought it was a great thing to bring to Dallas, especially considering the current economic conditions.”At Karmany, donation-based does not mean free.”We suggest fees for all of our regular classes,” Woods said. “If you can’t pay the suggested amount, then you can pay whatever you can afford.”The suggested amount for a drop-in class is $15.”Some pay $20 because they can afford it, but others can only afford $10 or $5,” she said. “Our Dallas studio is near SMU, so we get college kids who may not pay as much, but we find it all evens out.”Since switching to donation-based classes, Lieberman says she has found people to be amazingly generous.”I’ve had people give way more than a class would cost — like $100,” she said. “They want to help other people who can’t give much.”Kristi Hess, who attends classes in Grapevine, said the donation-only concept was easy to accept.”If I could give $100,000 every time, I would,” she said. “I get that much out of it.”Instructors benefit, too.at Karmany, yoga teachers work much like hairstylists in a salon. Rather than being paid the standard $25 a class fee, the instructor rents the space for the class and reaps the benefits from the donation bowl.”If they have a huge following, they share in the rewards of that,” Woods said. “Some classes get up to 30 or 35 people in it, depending on the time of day.”If everyone pays $10, that adds up.”The teacher gets to keep half of the money,” Woods said. “It’s really like owning their own business.”It’s hard to make a living by charging $25 a class, but this approach is really beneficial to the teacher and it makes yoga more accessible, she said.at Om on the Mat, instructors are paid a flat rate per class, but Lieberman is moving toward a new approach in which teachers keep whatever is in the donation bowl, minus a small amount to cover the rent.Instructors have supported the idea and some have offered to teach for free, Lieberman said.”It should not be a financial issue,” said Marsha Stewart, a yoga instructor at the Grapevine studio. “It’s what yoga is all about.”The bigger pictureFor Barrow, having a donation-only class was an important part of her vision for the studio that she operates in Fort Worth.Yoga is about whole wellness, and part of that is meaningfully participating in the community, she said. Nonviolence, compassion and loving kindness play a big part in the philosophy of yoga.”In donation yoga, you are putting that into action,” she said.The concept of connecting with others in the community is embedded in the karma flow classes, Eklund said.”None of us as individuals are alone,” she said. “We’re all connected together, and we need to think about that more often.”At Om on the Matt, all the barriers that might keep someone away from yoga have been removed — including mirrors and age limits. Classes include children as young as 6 to adults in their 60s. Pregnant women, amputees — everyone is accepted.Lieberman said that moving to donation-only classes meant trying something new without any expectations. It all comes down to trusting life, she said.”It’s a leap of faith and trust that more than enough will be provided,” Lieberman said.Lieberman says she has no doubt that she made the right decision.”There’s just so much joy when you do it this way,” she said. “It’s the only way to go.”

Instructor: Abby Kurtz, of Boulder. Kurtz is a personal trainer, specializing in pregnancy and postnatal fitness, and she is Colorado’s only licensed Tupler Technique practitioner. she began teaching workshops in Boulder in August. She’s been involved in fitness since 2003.

What is the workout: The Tupler Technique was designed to heal weak connective tissue in your abs and bring the two sides of your ab muscles together, essentially cinching your waist together, creating better support for your organs and back and ultimately leading to a flatter stomach.

What’s different: “This is completely different than what everyone else has told you,” Kurtz says.

The class teaches that no one should do crunches, jackknives or Pilates 100s, saying the outward force on the outer ab muscles can make the separation worse, or even cause it.

Inspiration for the class: Kurtz learned the technique in August from the founder, Julie Tupler. Kurtz says she brought it to Boulder because she saw a need.

“The Tupler Technique made sense to me, had the research to back it, and better yet, it worked,” Kurtz says.

What does it cost: The six-week workshop costs $175. This includes a splint and guidebook. you can attend the first day of the seminar alone for $50 and buy the splint separately for $38 and the guidebook for $15. I’m the cheapest and poorest person in Boulder County, and I think this class is worth the price.

Who does it? anyone with a separation between the two sides of your abs. some people can feel it themselves, but you might also need Kurtz to help.

Columbia’s research shows that 90 percent of women who have a baby will have this separation if they don’t do exercises to strengthen their deep ab muscles. Hormones and the pressure of the uterus cause the sides your abs to split, and the tissues connecting the muscles become weak and soft.

A separation is often what causes the “mummy tummy” or pouch that won’t go away, no matter how many crunches you do. you can have a flatter stomach again and repair this separation at any time — even if you had your child 50 years ago. Men also can have a separation. (Think: Beer bellies.)

When: The full program lasts 18 weeks. during the first six weeks, class meets three times for several hours to learn exercises and measure progress. you must wear a stomach splint (a fabric and Velcro wrap) 24 hours a day, and do exercises three times a day. The exercises take progressively more time over the weeks.

The next “Mummy Tummy” workshop starts Jan. 5. Meetings are 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 5; 10 a.m.-noon Jan. 26; and 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 16.

When I signed up, I didn’t realize the time commitment. toward the end, I found it hard to make the time to do all of the exercises every day. I gave it a good shot, though. I’d grade myself a B+, but not an a.

Level: The moves themselves are not difficult, but they are easy to mess up. That’s why Kurtz recommends taking the workshop instead of trying to figure it out on your own. I think the workshop was useful to keep me accountable.

At first, my core and back were sore. in fact, after the first few days, I thought about opting out because it was so uncomfortable. If you try to cram too many exercises in one sitting, your muscles might get sore, or you might find you are unable to continue or do the moves correctly.

The workshop is appropriate for anyone, though, even if you have physical limitations or are out of shape.

Format: Each student has a book with 18 weeks of exercises and boxes to check. Exercises are broken into morning, afternoon and evening.

The main exercises are contracting your deep ab muscles (imagining sucking your belly button against your spine), and head lifts, which are like mechanical curl-ups, except keeping your shoulders on the ground and only lifting your head, while pulling the two sides of your stomach together.

Equipment: The splint and a scarf, which you use to cinch up (or “double-splint” ) your stomach while doing exercises.

The downside of the splint: It is uncomfortable. It bunches up under your clothes. The Velcro is so strong that it can ruin a fancy chenille sweater if you’re not careful with it, yet somehow when I slept, the thing would come unattached and I would end up half-Velcroed to my comforter.

The plus side: It works, which I can tell by how tired my abs got at the end of the day when I wore it. I didn’t wear the splint for a few days, to see if it made a difference. in addition to constantly keeping your awareness on your stomach (even subconsciously), it keeps your muscles engaged.

Kurtz says it is possible to get results without the split, but it takes longer. Although it will annoy you often and make you look really silly on the beach (yup, I happened to have a beach vacation in the middle of all of this), it’s worth it.

What to wear: you can do these exercises in any clothes. I did them while driving, at my desk and while feeding my daughter.

Muscles worked: This targets the deep (transverse) ab muscles and the connective tissue. The premise: The three layers of ab muscles are connected, so every time the transverse presses back toward the spine, it pulls the two sides of the top (rectus) with it, pulling them together.

One new move: Sit with your hands on your upper and lower belly. Imagine your stomach travels on a horizontal elevator, with the first floor when you take a belly breath and push your stomach out, and the sixth floor when you imagine your belly button pressing against the spine. Suck in your stomach from third to fifth floor. Squeeze and hold the backward movement. Count out loud (to make sure you’re breathing). Do 100 contractions per set, which takes about 2 1/2 minutes. Note: It’s easy to do this small movement wrong or ineffectively, so be careful.

What I loved: The quick results (see below). The fact that I could work out while driving or sitting around and it would make a significant (not infomercial-style) difference. The amount of information I learned and having a better understanding of my body.

What I didn’t like: As the class went on, I found it hard to make time to do the head lifts. you can’t do those in your car. Plus, they have so many steps that I never wanted to do them.

How I felt after the class: after the first class, I felt like I had learned a lot but I didn’t know if it would really work. I was hopeful that it would, but it seemed a little far-fetched to be able to essentially suck in your belly and get skinnier.

How I felt later: OK, so now for the dramatic revealing of results. during the first week, I went down two pants sizes, without dropping a pound. This indicates the change was in my body shape and not mass.

After six weeks, I lost a little more than 2 inches on my waist, bringing me back to my pre-pregnancy clothes. For a baseline, I gained 70 pounds in my pregnancy, and I’m only 5-1, so I never thought I’d touch those clothes again.

The gap in my abs improved from a three-finger gap in the top, middle and lower stomach to a two-finger on top and two-and-a-half finger on bottom. My middle gap stayed at three fingers.

I was a little disappointed and confused in those results, because my body had obviously changed so much and because so many other women in my class closed their gaps much more — some even completely.

Kurtz explained that the real change with my body was in the strength of the connective tissue between the abs. before, my tissue was very weak, meaning it was barely holding in my organs. (Yikes!) What I saw sticking out wasn’t actually fat, but my innards. by strengthening the connective tissue, my body can now hold those organs in, which made my stomach flatter and cinched up the inches.

I also saw a change that few (if any) other folks will experience. The delivery nine months ago left me with several huge hematomas (blood pools from internal bleeding from complications with the c-section). It could have been combined with the time frame, but since I started the Tupler Technique, my hematomas are almost gone. Doctors said they might never go away. Part of the reason I was wearing pants several sizes bigger was because anything on the waistline caused a lot of pain. that pain is gone now. gone! I want to throw a party and paint Abby Kurtz’s face on the cake frosting.

To me, destroying my hematomas is a much more profound result than even the health benefits of having a strong core or looking skinny. I thought I was going to have to live with this pain for the rest of my life. But I think the tiny, repetitive and deep movements broke up the bruises in a way I never would have done on my own.

Knowing that I still have several fingers’ widths to try to fuse together, I guess that means I can make my waist even smaller. That’s pretty exciting. But it also means I have a lot more work ahead.

I was impressed to learn that every woman in my class showed significant results and lost inches by six weeks. one woman repaired her herniated belly button, even though doctors said she would need surgery. I am sending a link to Kurtz’s Web site to all of my mommy friends, and I am now Tupler’s greatest billboard.
