Buddha real name was Siddhartha Gautama!!

He was born in accient india in a place called "Lumbini" which is now in modern day nepal!!

His father was a hindu king and as a child Siddhartha Gautama was brought up as a hindu prince!!!

He grew up to become adult prince!!

He left his family and his son to teach what was taught to him as a king to the lower castes of asia and the poor!!!

His teachings was based off the "rigveda" of the hindu text!!!

His yoga tantra ect was taught to him as a prince via the gurus of india!!!

He is said to of died of food poisoning!! but im not sure if anyone would know about that.

the 5th is incorrect i guess. he left everything in order to find the way to end suffering.
6th: though he was coming from hindu family but his teaching does not based on rigveda. four noble truth is nothing to do with this.
7th; yeah he learn yoga tantra for six months from hindu guru before becoming buddha but later he left because it wasnt what he was looking for. then he make six years of meditation looking in him mind for the answer. which no hindu masters has done before. only then he became buddha.

8th; his holy books are called "tripitaka" not "ripitaka" or three basket.it was not re-writen, it was writen down on both sanskrit and pali around 3rd century BC during the 3rd buddhist council.

Prince Siddhartha of the Sakya Clan, born in the Lumbini Gardens in present day Nepal, was raised as a Prince with all the education of the Vedas as was usual for any other Hindu Prince of those days. Of course, he was a scholar who was well versed in Sanskrit and Pali etc.

He became disturbed by some things that he saw in his adult days and left the Kingdom in search of the Truth which led him to Bodh Gaya in present day India, where he found enlightenment and was given the Title – Sakyamuni Siddhartha Gautama Buddha.

There wasn't any Caste system there then, so,no, he did not go to teach the "lower Castes", nor did he get his inspiration form the Rg Veda nor did he teach yoga tantra which isn't even a real thing and no, he didn't die of any poisoning, but, he died a normal death diagnosed as mesenteric infarction, a symptom of old age; which is often misconstrued as food poisoning since he died shortly after his final meal and his cousin Devadatta had tried to kill him many times before.

The thing about Buddhists working with the lower Castes came much later when the Buddhist Sangha opposed the Caste system, over a millennium later, and had their bhikkus go and work among the lower Castes which got a lot of them converted to Buddhism.

Just FYI, Sakyamuni Siddhartha Gautama Buddha did not try to do anything more than Reform his own Religion – Hinduism. The Buddhism thing happened much after his death when the Sangha developed it into a separate Religion.

He was a Nepali.

Sounds like you're falling asleep. There is a misnomer about meditation. The purpose isn't to relax you. It's to put a healthy balance between brain and emotions.

If you relax to that extream it's not meditation.

Yoga Nidra means deep sleep at midnight that we are not aware of it because, your ego gets lost. you say " Thoughtless Moments", it is not, because you wont be there in thoughtless consciousness.

You are having a nap.

This is not the "Yoga Nidra" you are performing. you first learn how to perform then tell about your experience.

Yoga Nidra is just a technique(Tantra}, that allows one to become aware of the experience of the sahaja or our natural state…
Let me explain…there are 3 states…the sleeping, dreaming and the waking …in the 24 hr cycle…
of these…the sleep state is not accessible to our consciousness, but only as a feeling of restfulness when we wake up…the dream state is a little more accessible…we can see whats on the screen and have a memory of it, but cannot interact or interface with our body or mind…the waking state is the only one available where we can interact/interface, but is of a fleeting or temporary nature in a way that it ends up as day/night, and the cycle loops as we go to sleep…this leads us to leaving unfinished business at the end of the day…the creation of karma…

now, the Gurus have said that in the Waking state…there are 3 states…Moda, Pramoda and Pramana…
for eg. I am walking in the street…i see a delicious mango…in desire it…this desiring or the recurring in the mind is called Moda…i go buy the mango and possess it…this feeling of possessiveness is called Pramoda…
i go home and enjoy eating the mango and get satisfied…this feeling of satisfaction…of the culmination of the desire…is called Pramana…or the same state i was in before i saw the mango…the sahaja or the natural state…

All Yogas are designed to lead us to the state of Pramana…or the state before the mind enters…the natural state, while our education, in fact the world tells us to dream other peoples dreams and run behind our dreams…
the Waking state is exactly that…being Awake…without dreams or sleep…and Yoga teaches us first to be conscious and then tune in to that Waking Reality…
one more thing…pleasure is of the body…joy is of the heart…happiness is of the mind…and Bliss is of the self…if you can recognize the blissful state…which is constant and without dreams…and with yoga, be in it…content in the now…then you are said to be in the dreamless, sleepless waking state…

While many prefer to fly between African countries, our group decided a self-drive safari would not only be more affordable but flexible for four self-confessed control freaks

First stop -Kruger National Park. Established in 1898 it is one of the Africa’s largest parks and one of seven game parks we will visit over a five-week self-drive tour through South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

If you are not a morning person, you may want to rehash the African safari, especially if you want to see or photograph wildlife.

We leave the gates daily at 6 a.m. ready for lions, and more and oh my Kruger doesn’t disappoint! In our first two days we bag the big five – on digital cameras that is. That’s, a phrase coined by white hunters to refer to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. it includes the African Elephant, Rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, lion and the leopard.

We encounter our first leopard sighting shortly after diverting around a 15-foot crocodile sunning on the road near Sabi Camp.

In the African safari world a leopard or predator sighting is akin to a 40 cm powder day in Whistler. Like skiers nudging their ski tips ever closer in the lift line, jeeps and trucks jostle for position, protecting every inch of real estate to provide clients with the best and closest vantage point.

For the self-driver who is deprived of radios, elevated open air safari vehicles and history one must rely on good eye-sight for spotting, a driver/friend that doesn’t mind being instructed by several back seat drivers and other self-drivers who often stop you to reveal predator sightings.

From Kruger we drive 1,000 km to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park bordering South Africa, Botswana and Namibia in the Kalahari Desert. Famous for its black-maned lions and the small mammal the meerkat, made famous by Animal Planet’s Meerkat Manor, our three-day stay brings a close viewing of large male lion, our only Cheetah sighting and a night stay at the Kalahari tent camp where laughing Hyenas serenade us to sleep.

Entering Namibia we head for the famous sand dunes of Sossusvlei, however, our dreams of cobalt skies contrasted with red earth are dashed as high winds and milky skies greet us instead. Despite the winds we hike the dunes, test our trusty Tucson through the ’4×4 only’ sand roads and marvel at the ghostly expanse of Deadvlei, a large area of dried white clay punctuated by the skeletons of ancient Camelthorn trees.

At around the 5,000 kilometre mark the air conditioning disappears on the Tucson. To simulate travelling through Etosha National Park without A/C just imagine holding a blowdryer up to your face for several hours. Heat aside; Etosha became one of my favorite spots for its abundance of wildlife and great accommodation.

In camp Okaukuejo, the main attraction is a permanent waterhole, which is floodlit at night. we often strolled down after dinner with a glass of wine to watch wildlife line up for their turn at the watering hole.

At one point we almost pulled the pin on the Botswana portion of our trip thanks to affordability issues. Botswana is known for its highly priced exclusive lodges. But then we found the Thamalakane River Lodge about 19kilometres from Maun. This affordable luxury lodge offered us a base from which to stage day trips to the famous Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve.

In Maun we traded our trusty Tucson for a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser, as the roads in the Moremi and our final game park, the Chobe National Park, are 4×4 only. after three tire punctures we ignore the 4×4 owner’s request not to lower the tire pressure and make the nine-hour rough drive through the park to Chobe.

Situated in the far North East corner of Botswana, the area is easy to get to via Victoria Falls and cheaper than the rest of Botswana.

If you love elephants, Chobe is for you. an estimated 100,000 elephants roam the 10,566 square kilometer park.

We fell in love with the affordable Chobe Safari Lodge, $30 sundowner boat cruises and a pride of lions we were fortunate to view on our own on our last day.

It was a perfect end to five weeks – the four of us and three magnificent lions mere metres from the truck-sort of like having Blackcomb Mountain all to oneself.

I HAVE never been able to get into yoga. It’s always been a disappointment, even boring. I’ve taken a few classes, but afterward I never felt that I did anything other than just move around a little. it didn’t quiet my mind. I didn’t feel more flexible. I never felt I learned anything about the poses and why we were doing them.

Yet I’ve heard that hatha yoga is not only a way to get much-needed exercise, but it can also help relieve mental stress, chronic pain and improve balance and agility. I know it can be excellent for pregnant women and seniors, and it’s a hit all over urban centers such as Berkeley and San Francisco. Doctors, knowing my quandary about finding the right type of exercise for myself, always recommend yoga. it sounds great, but why can’t I get into it?

For this month’s Trimming Trends series, I took four styles of yoga at different studios. What I found is that yoga can meet my wants for physical activity and emotional and mental balance if I do just one thing — try and try again.

There are dozens of styles of yoga and hundreds of teachers all over the Bay Area, all with a unique way of coaching.

I found that not only does it matter what style of yoga you’re taking, it also matters that you find the right teaching fit for you, even if that fit doesn’t happen on the floor of the first studio where you unroll your mat.

Teacher: Antonia Fokken, licensed marriage and family therapist.

Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara “is grounded in a Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness,” according to Friend’s website.

Before class, I chatted with Ann Dyer, owner of Mountain Yoga, about why people take yoga.

“Most people come to yoga because something hurts,” she says. it can be stress, a bum knee, a growing belly. “People come to yoga to feel better.”

I like the idea of taking a class with a mental health professional. Perhaps her work would somehow blend into her yoga practice, and I would almost get therapy as well as exercise — bonus!

About 10 minutes before class, I placed my red yoga mat in the back of the medium-sized studio — typical of a first-timer — and relaxed. I watched as other students rolled around on their spines while others gathered blocks, blankets and pads. Apparently, you need a lot of stuff to do yoga.

Fokken opened the class with “om,” a mantra typically chanted in the beginning of all classes to recognize the movement of the universe. she then read us this quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E. Frankl:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

The meat of the class consisted of typical movements and poses. we did the downward-facing dog, warrior poses and a tree pose. About halfway through, Fokken led us to the wall where we practiced the L pose, a challenging one that I surprised myself by actually achieving, and handstands, which I could not do. There was laughter and clapping.

Fokken twisted us into pretzels and had us try parts of the eka pada galavasna, or an arm-balancing “flying pigeon pose,” as best we could, encouraging us to listen to our bodies and keep breathing along the way. throughout the class, she corrected my poses and helped me get into correct alignment. she explained the benefit of poses as we went along.

The class closed with the lights dim and us in the total relaxation corpse pose, or savasana. Fokken offered me an eye pillow for this calming end to a challenging and rewarding class. For the first time, I liked yoga and wanted more.

Teacher: Laura Presnick, chiropractor. Presnick has been practicing yoga since 1972, teaching it for more than a decade.

Presnick, who prefers to be called “Dr. Laura,” will ask you about any injuries before she starts class. she wants to know if you have a stiff knee or a numb shoulder. she can direct your personal yoga experience to accommodate and even help address those injuries.

Gentle hatha yoga combines different types of yoga into one class. It’s not even close to a full cardio workout. it promotes stretching and balance more than anything else. In the yoga world, this class is like water aerobics. It’s great for the body but low-impact.

A dozen women were in the class, many Presnick’s patients, and some had that stiff knee I was talking about. although I am not injured, I could benefit from practicing yoga moves that improve my balance. Presnick’s class put a heavy, yet still gentle, focus on balance to prevent falls and injury.

I breezed my way through the standing bow pose and tree pose, challenging myself to do the more advanced position in each so I get more out of the class.

Mostly, I felt that gentle hatha was pretty easy and better suited for people with injuries or for seniors with limited mobility.

Teacher: Bruce Guterman, a longtime yoga practitioner with a background in psychology.

Tierra Yoga is this darling postage stamp of a place in a new development on the bay waterfront. There were only three people in my class, including me, so this experience was intimate and personalized.

I chose Vinyasa because of its more challenging nature. It’s unlike many other forms of yoga where you hold poses for a while. instead, you flow quickly from one pose to another, often repeating poses, getting the heartrate going.

Guterman led the three of us easily through downward-facing dogs, humble warrior and the chair pose, challenging us to bend just a little farther back and keep our backs just a little straighter each time we did a chair pose.

Though I liked Guterman’s class, I wasn’t sure my experience at Tierra was the challenge that Vinyasa is heralded to be because of the small class size and personalization. so I skipped on over the next week to San Francisco’s Yoga Tree for another all-level Vinyasa class, a 90-minute one with more than 30 people. I felt knocked out and tired about 50 minutes into the exercise. we quickly moved from the standing warrior. to cobra pose on the floor, then up to a downward-facing dog. we repeated the sequence several times.

Like anyone is supposed to do when they are tired in yoga, I spent quite a while at Yoga Tree in child’s pose waiting for a second wind. I felt the stretching and work in my muscles the next day.

Teacher: Virginia Lam, former music executive and stay-at-home mom who has been practicing Bikram for eight years and has a Bikram certificate.

Bikram yoga or “hot yoga,” where the studio is ideally heated to 105 degrees, sounded like punishment to me.

All the yoga teachers warned me that Bikram was a completely different experience from your typical hatha class.

When I finally mustered up the guts to attend, we started in a room where the thermostat read 109.3 degrees. Bikram, I noticed, attracted more men than the other classes.

Lam is an encouraging, if not pushy, coach. She’s doesn’t tell you to take it easy; she wants this practice to be hard and for you to feel the stretching and working of your muscles. There is very little spirituality injected into Lam’s class.

She says Bikram can be for anyone of any age and, while there were seniors in the class, I was dubious. It’s tough.

“The worse thing you can do to your body is you don’t move,” Lam says. “If you can do 5 or 10 percent of the class, it’s 100 percent good for you.”

I did about 80 percent of the class, resting in child’s pose and drinking my water whenever the heat and the stretch were too much. I felt dizzy once, but heat can do that to me. as opposed to other types of yoga where there can be a combination of any of the 600-plus standard poses, Bikram uses only 26, and Lam says classes are usually the same no matter where you go.

It turned out that Bikram, especially with instructor Lam, was the most challenging of all the classes. I felt my heart pump in some poses. The locust — a floor pose where you lift both arms and legs and balance mostly on your torso — and balancing stick — stand on one straight leg with the other stretched back in a 90 degree angle — challenged my mind and body. The next day I felt that good-workout soreness. although more expensive than the others, Bikram is more likely to give you that workout feeling, if that’s what you’re looking for. and I was.

In taking five classes in less than a month, I completed dozens of before-movement “oms,” practiced yogic breathing three times, fell — unbalanced — more times than I can count and said “namaste” (“I honor the Spirit in you which is also in me”) after every class.

I sweated and grunted, mirrored my neighbors’ moves to learn how I should move and even quieted my mind and stayed in the moment as I did each pose. Will I become a yogini? I’m not there yet, but I’m on my way.

If you want to look fabulous, feel great, boost your immune system, lift your mood, stay youthful and sleep well, there’s something you can do: exercise.

Grab your gym bag — or get it back out after your already waning new Year’s enthusiasm — and we’ll help you through the basics of signing up for an exercise program and sticking with it.

Experts say the No. 1 reason we start enthusiastically and then taper off is because we are not motivated, so pick a reason that gets you going: you want to reduce your risk of disease, you want to lose weight and look better, you want more energy or you love your family and want to be around longer.

Once you have that, you need to skip the excuses: “I’m too tired” or “I don’t have enough time,” or the classic “I don’t like exercise.”

Then you get to the last step: make a plan and set your goal. Here’s where you plan a fitness routine that includes cardio, strength training and other exercises that you can do with or without weights.

But first you need to find a gym: This is the time to do it. Most area gyms are offering deals right now for the start of the new year.

“It sometimes costs less than a dollar a day when it’s a zero enrollment fee and $24.99 or $29.99 a month, like it is now,” said Pat Cuoco-Barber, assistant manager at Gold’s Gym in Niskayuna.

Cuoco-Barber, who has been in the fitness industry for 30 years, says the only foolproof way to ensure that you will like the gym is to sign up for the seven-day pass or the free trial they give out.

“Try out the gym at the time that you have to work out, then you get a feel for what it will be like when you come in, how crowded it will be, can you still work out on the equipment you want, etc.,” she said.

“Do the free orientation, meet the trainers. Don’t be afraid to ask if the trainers are nationally certified, don’t be intimidated.”

And one more thing, she added, “Make sure it’s clean.”

The time to check everything out is in the initial visit.

Contracts can be confusing. Here’s the bottom line you need to focus on: usually, there is an enrollment fee and then a monthly fee.

Sometimes, the monthly fee is a certain amount for say, two years and then it goes up or it stays at one consistent rate always. you need to check out the small print and check it out before you sign up with the gym.

Gym veterans like Shachi Chandra, 27, have joined one gym after the other and they always go for the small monthly fee.

“It works best for me. I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg to work out,” said Chandra, who goes to Gold’s Gym.

Some gyms offer a flat fee but then have a higher fee that includes classes.

“Find what fits your budget best. think about location. If you’re taking classes up here but you live in new York City or Syracuse, you will then have access to a gym near you when you go home,” said Noah Poissant, fitness coach at Bally’s in Crossgates Mall in Guilderland.

Make it a point to ask when you join a chain whether they will allow you to work out in different locations.

Bally’s will allow you all access all over the state, but most are location-specific. be sure to check this out first before you join.

But Poissant finds the logistics are not the main thing consumers worry about.

“The biggest misconception newcomers have is that the gym is very crowded and they will have no place to work out, but that’s not true, and even when we are crazy packed, there’s always machines available,” he said.

Make sure you’re comfortable: If you want a women-only gym, there are places like Curves, which design 30-minute workouts specifically for women. They go through a circuit of machines twice.

So, no more excuses. Just pick a gym and start the journey to a newer, fitter you.

Checklist for gym bag

1 nylon hold-all bag

1 combination lock (Most gyms are set up with the lockers that can be locked, but they don’t give out locks.)

1 pair of flip flops (to avoid getting anything on your feet and preventing athlete’s foot and generally staying clean)

1 large bath towel

1 hand towel (to carry with you in the gym to wipe off sweat)

1 washcloth

1 hair brush

Toiletries — shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion and deodorant

Make-up bag

Hair dryer and hair products like styling gel

1 plastic water bottle

Change of clothes

Equipment: a yoga mat can be rolled up. If you bring your own weights, depending on their size, you may need another bag to carry them.

How to pack it: put your clean clothes at the bottom. your make-up bag and the toiletries at the sides. Pack flip-flops and towel in the bag last so you can reach them first. your combination lock goes into the side pockets and so do extra items such as hair gel, rubber bands, etc. If you want, you can pack a book for the cardio machines, batteries for the headset and a snack. you can also carry plastic bags for sweaty gym clothes.

How comfortable you feel at the gym depends, in part, on who goes there. Here is a list of some of the types you might encounter during your visits to find a gym.

The grunters: you all know this guy. He’s the body builder and he can bench press a small car. He looks huge and he picks up massive amounts of weights. He picks them up and he lets out one huge grunt. Soon the gym becomes a symphony of his grunts as he lifts and drops.

The flexers: otherwise known as the posers. They strut their stuff, walk up and down, never out of sight of a mirror. Question is, when do they actually work out?

Fashion queens: Fantastic body, check. Long hair to flip back, check. great clothes, check. Hair band color co-ordinated, check. They’ve perfected the walk, the moves and the makeup, but you always get the impression that they are searching for the nearest runway.

The cellphone talkers: you wonder who they are calling at 5 a.m., but there they are, taking up the machine you’re waiting for, as they chat away.

The pajama wearers: you know this category. It’s Tweety or Power Rangers pajamas with a sweatshirt. Whatever it is, it’s a don’t. Please, no one will take you seriously.

The “wannabe” personal trainers: Warning! these people are not personal trainers and they are not professionals; they are just regular people who just can’t seem to mind their own business. when they see you using the wrong form, they say they just want to help. and they are right there “helping” you, and you can’t get them to leave. They are the resident show-offs. Avoid them.

Pick your tunes

Gym-goers swear that the fast beat of the music makes them work out harder. Here’s a sampling of favorite songs they swear by:

For Katie Alsois, 27, who lives in Schenectady and works in real estate, it’s “So what?” by Pink. “I love pumping to it. that and anything by Pearl Jam.”

Vanessa Anderson, 26, a teacher from Schenectady, likes “What’s My name?” by Rihanna. “I like working out to music; without it, there would be only silence.”

Brian Nowell, 20, from Niskayuna, says he likes “Gimme some More” by Busta Rhymes. “Music is what you need when you work out, it sends the blood pumping,” he said.

Zach Betkowski, 18, Colonie, who goes to Hudson Valley Community College, likes “Sleep Now in the fire,” by rage Against the Machine. “I work out faster as the tempo goes up.”

Eric Morrisette, 22, from Schenectady, likes anything by Bon Jovi. “I like anything with a beat.”

Debbie Malkiewiez, 48, a nurse from Colonie, likes Errol Smith’s “Fever.” “I can’t work out without music.”

And Shachi Chandra, 27, from Niskayuna, likes Bollywood songs from India. “The more fast-paced, the better,” she said.

I had a pair of dance jazz/performance pants which I've tossed out. I recently bought a pair of yoga pants, which actually feel more comfortable. is there really a difference?

jazz pants are looser, mre flowy, and usually not made of casual material. unlike yoga pants.

SANTA CRUZ – Gateways Books & Gifts will close in January – unless a buyer can be found for the popular 32-year-old store that specializes in personal growth, yoga and new age spirituality.

In the store, notices about the change sit on the counter, addressed “To our Beloved Community.” On a recent day, a looming deadline of Feb. 1 to find a buyer was hard to miss as customers expressed sadness and asked how the sale was going.

Rami Hanna, a Santa Cruz artist, was one of those milling around in the bright and peaceful store filled with books, journals, recordings, candles, yoga clothes, incense and more.

“I love this place, it’s so beautiful,” she said. “Santa Cruz should have these kind of places everywhere.”

Hanna said she belongs to a spiritual community in Oakland and can find similar products there, but hopes a buyer can be found to keep Gateways in Santa Cruz.

“I would hate for it to go away,” she said.

Gateways is a project of Hanuman Fellowship, a nonprofit that also sponsors Mount Madonna Center, Pacific Cultural Center and the Sri Ram orphanage and school in India.

This fall, after much contemplation, the fellowship board decided it could no longer afford to keep the store open and would close the store if a new owner could not be found before the lease expires.

Ratna Jenna Sturz, a store founder who works and lives at Mount Madonna Center outside Watsonville, said finances became strained about five years ago, when they moved from an expensive, smaller Pacific Avenue location to the current, 5,000-square-feet site on Soquel Avenue near Seabright Avenue.

They were doing better at the new location, but then the recession hit, she said.

“It’s very hard to think Gateways will not exist at all in the community,” Sturz said.

Sturz said workers have gotten many expressions of support and condolence and inquires from potential buyers, and that she continues to meet with potential buyers.

“I think in the next couple of weeks we’ll know for sure,” she said.

The store first opened in 1978, after the fellowship began importing books on spirituality and yoga from India, she said. The first store was a tiny shop behind a herb shop on Pacific Avenue, Sturz said, and moved four more times downtown before settling in at the Seabright location.

Sturz said yoga was so new to the area when the store began that there was no place to buy yoga clothes, which now abound. The fellowship hired a seamstress to sew drawstring pants, she said.

Not only has yoga gone mainstream, there is also competition from online retailers and large chain stores. But Gateways is more than a store to many, often hosting speakers and other events.

Sturz and Hanuman Fellowship President Ward Maillard are overseeing the sale process.

At least two buyers have come close to buying the store, but the deals fell through, Maillard said.

He said it was a tough decision to not renew the lease after Feb. 1, but that the fellowship had to be responsible to the other entities it sponsors. The store is almost breaking even and will have a better December than last year, he said.

He said the store is “classic Santa Cruz” and has value in many respects.

“We are trying to find good stewards for it,” Maillard said. “We have analyzed it pretty carefully and think someone can make a go at it if they can devote the time to it. I’m still hopeful, but obviously we are running out of time.”

Maillard said he has few regrets.

“It’s been a wonderful experience,” he said. “I think we feel very much appreciated, and very much part of that eclectic mix called Santa Cruz.”

Muscles are contracted and stretched at a cellular, biochemical level. Lipids and proteins reorganize optimally in such stretching, allowing for better circulation. Joint mobility and range of motion is increased, and strength is built by the use of gravity. Muscles and joints are balanced.

Blood and calcium are brought to the bones. Working against gravity strengthens the bones. The organs of the immune system within the bones (red marrow) are boosted.

The lymph nodes are massaged, lymph is pumped throughout the body, and white blood cells are distributed throughout the body as the lymphatic system works more efficiently.

There is compression and extension to the thymus, spleen, appendix and intestines; lungs are stretched and flushed out by increased blood circulation. The endocrine glands are encouraged to secrete appropriate hormones, and the communication between hormones and various glands and systems of the body is perfected. Toxins and waste are eliminated through the organs of elimination.

The nerves are stimulated by compression and extension, improving communication within the systems of the body and supplying fresh blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout. The brain is stimulated by improved circulation and by varying blood pressure.

I guess I’m behind the curve. come to find out everybody and their mama is doing yoga. They’ve got hot yoga, cold yoga, kundalini yoga, hatha yoga, mommy & me yoga, and most recently–pet yoga? Because apparently some pets like to get their yoga on.

Dogs are naturally skilled at yoga, so say the dog yoga fanatics. (And I guess I’d have to believe them based the the picture above.)

They even have doggie & me yoga classes now. They call them DOGA. But don’t you think it is taking things just a bit too far when you and your dog are wearing matching pink yoga pants and are all stretched out on the yoga mat together. I’d say these folks need to get a baby, or a boyfriend, or a hobby. Or something. Cuz to me, this is just plain wrong. I mean, WOW, not even I get this much attention.

LOVE IT!!

I am 6’1″ and was resigned to yoga on mat that was too short. I was so excited to find a mat that was long enough and even doubly so to find this lovely towel! Highly absorbant and I don’t slip at all. Another plus is how it doesn’t wrinkle through the class–I put it down in the beginning and it stays where I put it through all of my poses. in short, very happy with this purchase. My only complaint is the lack of girly colors in this size–women can be taller than 6′, too, so listen up, Yogitoes–make us some cute colors in the Big size, please!!Yogitoes Big Skidless used with Manduka black mat pro

First of all you must wash this several times SEPARATELY before putting it in the wash with your other clothes. The tag says to do so, but the colors were still bleeding after 3 washings. 

I just measured my towel and it is 79″, which is 6 inches shorter than my Manduka Black Mat Pro 85″ mat. I learned if you don’t want to slip off the end of you mat you need to make sure your towel hangs off the back of your mat. The Manduka is very slippery when soaked with sweat, but grippy when dry. The Yogitoes is the exact opposite, slippery when dry and grippy when wet. So you may need to put a few drops of water on your Yogitoes towel where your hands and feet go in down dog before you start your practice so you don’t slip off your mat. 

I am a very sweaty 6’3″ male who does power yoga for 1.5-2 hrs 3-4 days a week. I’ve learned that I must immediately hang dry my towel in the sun or put it in the wash after a class. I was busy a couple of times after class and didn’t wash it till later in the day and my towel developed a moldy type smell that was hard to get rid of, even after repeated washing in warm water. If you don’t sweat that much you might not have that problem. 

If you sweat as much as I do you could find that the yogitoes towel will become super saturated where you put your hands. once your towel gets that wet it might move around a bit in down dog, or in lunge positions. for me that is usually toward the end of a class, but it could be a problem for you too if you sweat excessively like me. This is one of the reasons I wouldn’t give a 5 star rating. 

All that said I would recommend this product if you get sweaty during yoga and are sick of using a beach towel. I purchased the Indigo because it was a less expensive color.Shorter than listed but a good mat nonetheless

I love this mat and find it doesn’t slip during yoga class. It is much better than a towel. My only issue is that it is advertised as 80″, but is really 77.5″. I did wash and dry it on low temperatures as per the instructions and it may have experienced quite a bit of shrinkage. yet since I am tall (5′ 11″), it is a treat to finally have my entire head to toe body on the mat. I would recommend this if you need the extra length, just know that it won’t completely cover your 80″ mat.Great product, worth the price, but needs more colours!

I love my Yogitoes mat – it is very absorbent and actually seems much dryer than when I use a normal towel on my mat (I do Bikram yoga and so I sweat a lot), soft and comfortable to lie on. It is very slip resistant and nice and long, it extends 6 inches beyond my mat the long way on both ends, which is great for when you have to do a pose with a wide stance. I love it!

Like many people, new drinking and driving legislation in B.C. has forced me to change my behaviour.

The legislation has been in effect for just under a month. Anyone caught with a blood-alcohol level higher than 0.08 or who refuses to give a breath sample will face a three-month driving suspension, have their vehicle impounded for 30 days and pay up to $4,000 in fines and fees.

A new “warning range” of 0.05 will lead to a ban on driving for three days and $450 in fines and fees, all for a first offence.

One thing is clear: I need to break up with my bar.

The Cheshire Cheese Inn is an ersatz British pub with a wooden bar, your grandmother’s flowered upholstery and antique photos of no one in particular hanging on the walls.

The place has a reliable stable of regular clientele, the staff is welcoming and generally efficient, the beer is not overpriced. The music is kept at a level where you’re not forced to scream over it, and there’s often soccer on television.

I’m no barfly; I don’t have my own stool, I’m not permanently installed in the place.

But on Sunday night, when all is calm and the stars have aligned, I like to go to the pub by myself, have a beer, read the weekend paper and decompress.

I’ll pause for a moment now while you judge me: “The man drinks alone?” yes, I do. some people do hot yoga. I don’t judge them.

Here’s the problem: The Cheese is in Kerrisdale. I live in East Vancouver.

With the 0.05 rule, I’m not willing to risk that drive across town anymore.

I always felt certain that two beers over two hours left me fine to drive home, which I have always done completely clear-headed. But I frankly don’t have a handle on how the 0.05 rule changes things. Safety is, of course, the prime concern, but I’m not willing now to risk a fine or three-day driving ban for blowing in the warning range.

Fortunately, I live within walking distance of a concentration of bars disguised as restaurants on Commercial Drive.

So with a newspaper tucked under my arm, I set out to find my new Sunday night spot. How hard could it be?

First up, Falconetti’s. A dark narrow bar at 2nd and Commercial. on this night, it’s all hipsters and hockey. Toques and fedoras and trucker hats worn ironically bob in the fray. The Canucks are on the big screen. I find a vacant stool at the bar. The bartender pours me a Strongbow. beside me, two young men talk about the effect of steroids on one’s testicles. now the band is sound checking. Sensory overload. not for me.

Further down the street I pass the Libra Room. Vocal jazz. I keep walking.

Then what is perhaps the least cool place on the Drive, (maybe so uncool it’s cool – I can’t keep up) is Avanti’s Pub in the Il Mercado building.

This is the only official neighbourhood pub on the strip. it has occupied the corner of Commercial and Gravely since 1986. The air is thick with the smell of malt vinegar and residual smoke from the 1990s.

Old school projection TV, Budweiser banners strung around the room and two Keno screens flashing random numbers. One can imagine the ban on smoking hit this place hard. A scan of the clientele tells me there is little irony in the hats worn here.

The no-nonsense bartender is quick. She drops a bottle of Stella in front of me: no glass, pay up front.

The man sitting beside me is doing a crossword puzzle. behind me, four people seated at a table break into laughter over a story about the best ecstasy score ever. Too bleak. Too depressing. But I’m sure the regulars are comfortable here.

Before heading home, one last stop.

Timbre. on this night, the place is atypically quiet. The decor is rustic chic. Pine tabletops and wooden beams, original art hanging on the walls. The bartender – fresh-faced and friendly – tells me about the drink specials. It’s light enough to read, the music isn’t awful. Settling in with the weekend paper and a Red Racer IPA I think, I can live with this.

It’s the 0.05 solution.

Hopefully, you’ve gotten everyone back to school with all their reusable lunch and snack paraphernalia, but if you are still looking for some storage bags that hold something bigger than a sandwich, there’s Tili Bags.

Vermont Soaps Organic (vermontsoap.com) has a great website where it sells everything from bath soaps for people to shampoo for horses. It has a new line of organic baby soaps that will not harm sensitive skin. It even has a yoga mat cleaner if, like me, you’ve ever wondered what might be lurking on that sticky mat as you’re doing your downward-facing dog and cobra poses.

On the lookout for trends in the green arena, I had to laugh when I came across the term “EcoSexual.” these are tree-hugging folks who like to date others who are passionate about the environment. a quick Google search brought up lots of dating sites for people who want to date others for whom being green is a priority. Two are greensingles.com or planetearthsingles.com. who knows: maybe you will exchange e-mails with someone and have your first date at a vegan restaurant and then go for a walk in the woods.

It’s not too early to think about getting your house ready for heating season. First, make sure you get your furnace cleaned and serviced. Not only is it a good safety measure, but changing clogged and dirty filters will save you money, too, by making your furnace run more smoothly and more efficiently.

I'm starting to do Bikram yoga (hot yoga). I have a regular sticky mat and a manduka towel, but I'd like to get a yoga mat more suited to Bikram. what brand/mat do you recommend?

Many lay a fabric rug or even just a bath/beach towel over their sticky mat.
This absorbs the sweat which otherwise would make even a sticky mat slippery.
Having the sticky mat underneath helps keep the fabric from sliding around the floor.

I don't think you will find much difference between brands.
Just anything that is mostly (if not 100%) cotton.
(I don't know if any other natural fibers would be as good as cotton).
