kids yoga86 Yoga: Three Reasons You Should Not Do Yoga Posture Lotus
Subodh Gupta asked:

The Lotus – (Padmasana)

Years of consistent effort may be needed to make this advanced posture feasible.

In a Sanskrit language ‘Padma’ means ‘Lotus’ and in this posture the position of the legs look like a blooming lotus, hence the name. The position of the crossed legs and the erect back keeps the mind alert and attentive, which is why the Lotus posture has been given a great importance in yoga practice as it is best suited for concentration and meditation.

The Lotus is a wonderful yoga posture but it is not practical for most Westerners as a meditative posture. It places a lot of stress on the knee and hip joints, and should be approached with caution, mostly by the novices.

The Lotus stimulates the pelvis, spine, abdomen, and the bladder. The sacral nerves are tones as the flow of blood to the legs is redirected to the abdominal area, stimulating the digestive process. It applies pressure to the lower spine which has a relaxing effect on the nervous system.

The posture creates a natural balance throughout the body and the mind. When the knees and ankles are stretched enough to remain in the Lotus without discomfort, the posture creates a feeling of effortlessness. As the body becomes steady the mind becomes calm.

The Lotus is a beautiful posture with lots of benefits. However, in some health conditions this posture should not be practiced.

Three important reasons not to do Lotus posture:

1) If you have weak or injured knees avoid doing this posture as it places lots of stress on the knees.

2) If you suffer from sciatica do not attempt this posture.

3) In case of ankle injury do not practice this posture.

Caution: Always check with your doctor if you have any doubts or concerns regarding the suitability of this posture for you. It is best to perform this yoga posture in presence of a qualified yoga teacher.

A technique known by Jesus and taught to his close disciples, involved a chakra meditation on light. A version of this technique now revived and called Kriya Yoga was also known by St Paul and formed some of the early mystic esoteric teachings of Christianity. Even some Christian monasteries still practice Kriya Yoga. That is why diksha – initiation to Kriya Yoga is also called Jesus’s secret teachings.

kids yoga Yoga For Kids 7 Years and Older
Aadil Palkhivala asked:

Today’s kids face increased homework loads and pressure to compete academically, athletically, and socially. Stress relief tools for kids are becoming increasingly important. More and more, kids are finding Yoga to be an effective way to deal with stress, and gain other valuable tools for living at the same time.

When older kids come to yoga classes, they arrive tired from the stresses of homework, extra curricular activities, and their social life. Their yoga class gives them a chance to release stress from their body with the active exercises, and then the quieter, relaxing poses soothe their nervous system. It’s their chance to focus on themselves, where there’s no competition, no pressure to perform. Their yoga becomes about knowing themselves.

The benefits of yoga go beyond stress relief. Working with the basic physical yoga exercises called asanas, kids develop control over their emotions, gain self-confidence, and learn about themselves. Because of the non-competitive philosophy of yoga, kids learn to make decisions for themselves, without worrying about peer pressure.

The documented benefits of yoga are many: improving flexibility, concentration, lung capacity and circulation, strength, balance, and mental clarity. For kids, these benefits translate into important life skills. One of my instructors, Aurora, who has taught yoga at Yoga Centers for over 6 years, saw how yoga positively affected one of her 12 year-old students, who originally saw yoga as a way to improve his tennis game. “He told me there was another boy at school whom he would have hit before he started practicing yoga, but since he’d been practicing yoga his response was transformed. He could maintain his composure, and he chose to react without violence. He could react from a calm, neutral and strong place.”

One mother, whose 8 year-old son started doing yoga after working with an occupational therapist on motor skills, says that yoga helped her son gain coordination and confidence. “He was never very athletic, but now he has found a sport that he enjoys. He is learning how to become aware of his body, and this helps improve his motor skills.” Yoga also helps kids improve their concentration for reading, writing, and doing homework.

For the younger kids, yoga is mostly a joy-filled, heart-opening practice. Classes focus on finding the joy in exploring the poses as a group, and learning to express themselves. For children of all ages, yoga provides tools and life skills that can equip them to better deal with the stresses and challenges of growing up in today’s world.

Kids, did you know:

o Yoga is over 5,000 years old!
o Yoga started in ancient India.
o Most movie stars and Olympic athletes do yoga daily.
o Yoga is the world’s oldest exercise.
o Yoga is not a religion.
o Boys who do yoga well are called yogis.
o Girls who do yoga well are called yoginis.
o Yoga poses are called asanas: there are thousands of them.
o Asanas copy nature: animals, insects, trees, mountains.
o Yoga makes you strong, healthy and flexible.
o Yoga is fun, makes you happy, and kids love yoga.
o Yoga prevents sports injuries and makes sports easier.
o Yoga builds confidence and self esteem.
o Yoga makes you think more clearly.
o Yoga balances your emotions.
o Yoga teaches relaxation and lessens stress

snapshot 2008 04 03 16 37 16 Manduka eKO 5mm Eco Friendly Yoga Mat | Greener Living

As a background, I have been doing yoga for more than 15 years and have used many different mats, both personal and studio mats. I am spoiled by the Manduka Black Mat, which for me is the best there is. I do different styles of yoga, Iyengar and Vinyasa mostly. I bought the Eko mat hoping it would be a good light weight alternative to hauling the Black Mat to class. Unfortunately, it is nearly useless. Yes, there is the smell, which I know goes away, I have another rubber mat (Jade) which had that smell but no longer does,. The Jade is also far superior to the Eko for practice, btw. My main complaint is although the Eko mat is touted to be sticky, it only feels sticky and in actual use I find my hands creeping forward in down dog (I am at least an upper intermediate yoga student and do not have this problem with any other mat.)I find this mat to cause a sweat to form under my feet, which makes them slip. I have washed the mat to the manufacturer’s specifications, let it dry indoors – but if has gotten worse, not better. I am disappointed and will have to find another alternative. Manduka makes a great mat, but I really don’t like the Eko – other than the obvious green factor. The mat also has a hardness to it that is unlike anything I have ever used, and it does not feel welcoming.
