I am going to begin a Yoga class in a couple of weeks at the health club where I work. the class is held in the "mat room" which is a room where the floors are covered in gymnastics/wrestling mats. “Listen to the music,” Linda Jones told her chattering 1st-graders. “The music should give you a clue of how you should be.” 

At that, the 26 students managed to silence themselves. Single file and shoeless, they entered a large room where blue mini yoga mats and a calming, meditative tune awaited them.

For the next 45 minutes, Amparo Chigui Santiago led the children through the paces of (age-appropriate) yoga.

For starters, breathing exercises, eliciting a few half-hearted “oms”  soon were followed by a quick rhythmic change of music and an enthusiastic “Here we go!” from Santiago.

“Rub your hands, sit up tall, take a deep breath, OMMMM!” the children sang.

Unlike the steady tone heard in most yoga studios, these “oms” had a vocal energy more often associated with playgrounds. and that was a good thing. Santiago, a dancer as well as a yoga instructor who has taught in schools for the past 30 years, knew she had captured the children’s attention and, momentarily at least, the spirit of yoga.

The class, part of a 10-week residency by the non-profit arts-in-education organization ArtsConnection, is given weekly to the school’s kindergarten through 3rd-grade classes.

Combined with music, dance and free movement, the children are introduced to the physically demanding and emotionally intense practice of yoga in a fun way.  they make up their own positions by imitating animals. they take magic carpet rides curled up on their mats. they play “Yogi says,” a disguised version of “Simon says.”

“It’s basically an adult class transformed into a kids’ class,” Santiago said.  “It’s all a connection of mind and body.”

Classroom teachers were on hand to monitor the 1st-graders, putting them in line when they rolled themselves up in their mats or giggled instead of going through a prescribed stretch. to regain the children’s attention, Santiago often sang the “butterfly song” (legs flapping, arms stretched) or called for the “Child’s Pose” (resting position on the floor).

Sometimes she just needed to say, “Tada—” and the kids finished it with,  “—sana!” jumping into Tadasana (Mountain Pose) standing position, their arms flailing in the air.

Santiago’s kindergartners were less focused (“No, don’t put them in your nose, put them on the mat,” a teacher advised some children during an exercise that required them to move two small pompoms across their mats with their toes). But even the five-year-olds reached moments of collective calm.

“If the kids have a way to relax and to think about how to feel what’s going on inside, then they’ll have some control over it,” explained Haruko Yamauchi, Program Manager at ArtsConnection.  “[Yoga] starts the year off with a good atmosphere.”

“I’m aiming to transfer what’s going on here to their classroom to be more focused in class,” said Santiago. “That’s my goal.”

Even after just a few sessions, teachers say they have noticed differences in their students.

“I see that they’re actually paying attention better in [yoga] class,” Jones said. “I like how you can feel the energy changing in the class.”

Jones uses meditation and yoga techniques in the classroom as a calming method. She holds up yoga cards with poses for the students to perform as lots of “oms” ring through the room.

“It works!” Santiago said.  “That’s the only class that actually walks in quietly and leaves quietly.”

Still, the instructor said, bringing yoga to young, easily distracted children requires some high-level self-calming techniques of her own.

“There’s so much happening, sometimes their energy is going all over the place,” Santiago said. “I just remind myself to breathe, because if not, I’d go crazy.”

I purchased a mat made from "TPE" and was told that it is the "environmental choice". However, I believe that this is still an oil/chemical based product, and by no means "natural" in any way. Yoga travel towels changed my life.  Seriously.  A yoga towel is a mat-sized sheet of cloth or microfiber that is used to drape over your yoga mat.

As soon as I started using a yoga towel, my yoga practice had improved.  I no longer had to worry about slipping in postures, and I could then focus on the important stuff: alignment, breath, and focus.  They helped improve my practice so much that I now refuse to do yoga without one.  Yoga travel towels are considered to be a must-have prop as they will significantly change the way you practice yoga.

Prevent Slippage

The yoga travel towel benefits me the most by helping with slippage.  My hands and feet tend to sweat, especially during a vigorous yoga class.  I would enter a downward-facing dog and would immediately need to struggle with drawing my hands back so that they don’t slip forward and fly out in front of me.  Ouch, faceplant.  This action is counter-intuitive for the posture.  In downdog, we’re supposed to be pushing into the ground to elongate the spine.
